The Weimar Republic was the post-WW1 German government created out of the defeat in 1918 and the outcome of the 1919 Versailles Treaty. Due to revolution in Germany it moved its seat of government from Berlin to Weimar, and a period of political struggle between the Left and Right followed leading to the rise of National Socialism and the election of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor in 1933. This would take Europe into another World War and eventually lead to the survivors of this corrupt regime being placed on trial at Nuremberg in 1946.

After an early start at school and our flight into Munich, we begin our look at the political situation in post-WW1 Germany in the 1920s. We look at the rise of political parties from the Left and Right, following the story of Adolf Hitler and the 1923 Munich Putsch.
We follow the route this uprising took through central Munich, seeing the Hoffbrau House where Hitler gave speeches, and then on into the Odeonsplatz. Here, Hitler was photographed in 1914 when he was volunteering to fight in WW1. This is also where Hitler's 'Beer Hall Putsch' was suppressed in 1923, leading to the 9 months in prison where he started work on the infamous Mein Kampf. We see the 'Field Marshall’s Hall' which was turned into a monument by the Nazis to the 'victims' of the Putsch, and also the nearby alley where dissenters to the Nazi Regime could bypass the memorial; avoiding the mandatory Nazi salute.
Following on from this, we visit Munich University to look at the story of Sophie Scholl; a young student who opposed the Third Reich and paid for it with her life. We then check into our student accommodation and have our evening meal.

We start this morning at Dachau, a Nazi Concentration Camp just outside of Munich. This was the first Concentration Camp opened in 1933 and was used to detain opponents to the Third Reich before it became a Death Camp. It also became the first Concentration Camp liberated by American troops in 1945, and was subsequently used to hold SS soldiers awaiting trial.
We then travel on to Nuremberg where we have time for lunch. In the afternoon, we look at how the Nazi party grew out of the Weimar period. We see the massive former Nazi Rally grounds, and visit the Congress Hall which is now a museum that covers the period. We then return to Munich and have an evening meal.

This morning we visit the Brown House, which is a memorial site describing the history of National Socialism and the rise of the Third Reich. We'll see the site of the memorial, built to the 'heroes of the 1923 Putsch' which was later partially destroyed by US Troops in 1945.
We also see what would have become the 'heart' of the Nazi Regime at the Konigsplatz, and discuss the rise of the Nazis and the path to war with the Munich Crisis in 1938. We then take our flight back and have a coach transfer back to the school.
