Overview

This one-day battlefield tour examines aspects of the war around Arras and Vimy, and rather than spend a day rushing round locations we visit select areas, spend time there, and use them to retell the story of the Great War and the experience of front line soldiers.

Sample Itinerary - Day Trip

This is a tour that can be completed in a day trip from any location in the south-East of England within 2-3 hours of the Channel Tunnel.

Day Trip - Arras and Vimy Ridge

After an early morning departure from the school, we proceed to the Channel Tunnel and travel to France. We head into Northern France and make our first visit of the day to Vimy Ridge, the impressive battlefield fought over between 1915 and 1917. Here we look at the development of trench warfare, walk through preserved British and German trench systems, and see mine craters from the ‘war underground’. We also visit the Vimy Memorial to examine the memorialisation of the First World War and discuss missing soldiers. Moving on, we begin our look into the German Army in WW1 and learn about the huge losses sustained by visiting the German Cemetery at La Targette, where more than 44,000 are buried. We travel to Arras where we visit the Wellington Quarries where we safely go underground to see what the British Army used as a shelter system in 1917. We look at life beneath the Western Front, seeing where men lived and slept, and made their way to take part in the Battle of Arras in April 1917. A unique experience on the British sector of the Western Front. We will then begin our return home via the Channel Tunnel, with arrival back at the school expected in the late evening.
