WW2 Tour- From Defeat to Victory: Dunkirk and the Liberation via Hull

This tour gives students the opportunity to explore Operation Dynamo- the evacuation from Dunkirk and also the Allied Liberation of Belgium in 1944, including visits to an original Bailey Bridge and a Sherman Tank.

4-Day Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Hull to Zeebrugge

We depart from school, arriving in Hull ready to board the evening ferry crossing to Zeebrugge. We have our evening meal on the ferry and enjoy the facilities available before spending the night on board.

Day 2 - Knocke-Heist, Adegem, Leopold Canal

After arriving in Zeebrugge and an early breakfast on the ferry, we collect our packed lunches and continue our journey into Belgium.

Our first stop of the day will be at the For Freedom Museum in Knocke-Heist. Here we see life-size reconstructions portraying the liberation of Belgium and discuss the history of this period. Students will also have the opportunity to handle WW2 objects and equipment.

Moving on, we will look at the battlefield along the canals in this area, visiting an original Second World War Bailey Bridge, and seeing where the Canadians attacked German forces in a concrete bunker line using flamethrowers and assault boats. Here we have our lunch.

In the evening, we will check into our accommodation in Ypres and enjoy an evening meal in a local restaurant. (We can also attend the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at Ypres, which takes place at 8 pm every evening to commemorate the fallen of WW1. We can organise for your school to participate in this (wreath to be supplied by school)).

Day 3 - Dunkirk

After breakfast at our accommodation and picking up our packed lunches we travel to Dunkirk to focus on Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from the Dunkirk beaches in May 1940 at the start of WW2.

We start at the Dunkirk War Museum, which holds an amazing array of material. We then see the seafront at Dunkirk where we view the Dunkirk Mole where two-thirds of those evacuated were loaded onto ships, and the main Dunkirk Beach area. We then visit the Dunkirk War Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing.

After this, we travel back to Zeebrugge and board the ferry ready for our evening crossing. We have our evening meal on the ferry and enjoy the facilities available before spending the night on board.

Day 4 - Hull
